Introduction

Our Diploma in Wealth Management fulfils the needs of those seeking a career and a lifestyle. The programme aims to develop a set of conceptual frameworks and analytical tools, and applies these to particular investments and investment strategies chosen from a cross-section of companies, securities and institutional contexts. Boundless job opportunities in this area are available. The other objective of the course is to provide all individuals to achieve better asset management skills and good financial habits. With this, one is able to better plan for the future.

There is more wealth in Singapore and other parts of Asia than ever before and that wealth requires managing. Everybody needs financial planning skills and a mind-boggling array of increasingly complex, but oftentimes little understood, financial products is available. This Diploma in Wealth Management is immensely suitable for at least three groups of prospective course participants: people who are looking for a rewarding career in the finance industry, employees in other industries who are contemplating a career switch, and individuals who desire to be well-educated in personal financial planning and wealth management. To whichever group you may belong, this programme provides you with cutting-edge knowledge about financial products, market trends and client relationship management as well as an understanding of the latest methodologies and analytical tools.

Accreditation

The Diploma is developed by Centre for Professional Studies (CPS) and accredited by the American Academy of Financial ManagmentTM (AAFM). Centre for Professional Studies is a registered private school with the Ministry of Education Singapore. Participants who successfully complete the diploma will qualify for Chartered Wealth Manager (CWMTM) professional accreditation from AAFM.

Entry Requirements

Credit passes in 3 GCE "O" levels subjects or equivalent
Attainment of 'N' Levels qualification or equivalent with relevant working experience
Professional or academic certificates from recognised institutions
In the absence of equivalent qualifications, mature candidates (18 years and above) with relevant working experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis)

Programme Outline and duration

This part-time Diploma in Wealth Management consists of 7 modules can be completed in 9 months. Each module takes place over a period of a month, comprising 76 hours per month. Participants will be involved in interactive lectures, group discussions, activities and exercises. Each participant's learning will be assessed by way of continuous assessment, such as assignments, tests, quizzes, oral presentations and/ or examination, which allows participants to demonstrate competency at stages of learning.

The 7 modules are:

WM - 810 Options Trading
This module focuses on an overview and current trends of options trading. Options trading is an attractive wealth management tool that constitutes an alternative to trading stocks. Whilst options trading will be relaunched in Singapore very soon, options can also be traded in many developed markets (such as the Chicago Board Options Exchange) via the internet. The unit covers the various technical aspects of options. In addition, psychological and strategic aspects of options trading are covered on an introductory level.

WM - 811 Financial Considerations of High Net-worth Individuals
This module focuses on the development of effective investment policy for mass affluent and high net-worth clients. It covers the industry overview and trends in the private banking business, compliance and regulation, and an appreciation of the microeconomic impact on the business and client relationship management in the context of wealth management.

WM - 812 Portfolio Construction
This module covers the first part of the investment process from constructing investment objectives and policies to asset allocation, security selection, revisions, monitoring, and performance measurement and attribution for individual and institutional clients. The concepts of risk and return, modern portfolio theory and the market anomalies will be discussed in great depths.

WM - 813 Alternative Investments
This module covers portfolio strategies such as tactical asset allocation to re-balance a portfolio of financial assets. A detailed analysis of the various hedging strategies for equities and fixed income will be discussed. The role of private equity, hedge funds and venture capital in wealth management will also be included. Further understanding of alternative assets such as commodities; precious metals, arts & paintings, stamps, real estate and insurance will be deliberated too.

WM - 814 Risk Management Strategies
This module focuses on the current role and the position of risk management practices within the wealth management industry. It will provide an understanding of the wealth management firms' risk exposure and their approaches to measure and manage those risks. Topics will include the identification of market, credit, operational, legal and reputational risks on various types of financial products. Mitigation of risk and strategies deployed will be discussed concurrently with the identification of risk.

WM - 815 Tax, Legal and Estate Planning
This module will focus on asset ownership structures devised specifically to address the incidence of taxes and to manage estate protection and generation planning. It will identify and discuss the different categories of taxes in various countries that are relevant to the private investor and how these impact wealth accumulation and the ultimate wealth distribution in the context of generation planning.

WM - 816 Paper Trading
This module covers both options and equity trading designed for novice traders to gain practical trading experience and also for experienced traders who need to refine their strategies. Participants use an Internet-based platform to trade stocks and stock options. The programme gives participants the opportunity to practice and gain valuable trading experience without losing real capital. The trading history of the participants will be tracked and profits and losses are evaluated. Paper Trading participants will be taught and coached on the different technical trading techniques.

Christopher is a senior financial professional with more than 15 years experience in investment banking, treasury risk management and strategic planning. He has great strengths in risk control, product accounting, revaluation methodology and operations control. He has successfully set up risk management procedures and monitoring tools for various banks over the years. Christopher has also been providing finance-related trainings to financial consultants and clients. Christopher currently provides advisory to MNCs in Beijing and conducts corporate training focusing on a range of wealth management courses for the banking sector and on risk management to international central bankers in London. He is also an Associate Member of Singapore Society of Financial Analysts and member of Association for Investment Management and Research and Chartered Institute of Bankers.

 

NICHOLAS TAN

Nicholas has more than 10 years of experience in the foreign exchange (FX or Forex) arena. He had been a FX dealer with a few foreign banks and is currently a remisier with UOB KayHian. His areas of focus includes taking propriety position and quoting prices to both corporate and private clients, to name but just a few. Nicholas is currently facilitating the futures and currency trading sections of our Diploma in Wealth Management, Paper Trading module.
 

 

JOSEPH KWOK

Joseph is an Associate Financial Planner (AFP) with Financial Planning Association of Singapore and Certified Public Accountant (CPA) with Australian Society of Certified Practicing Accountants. Joseph has many years of exposure in the banking sector. He currently champions the development of integrated wealth platform and other financial advisory tools for Standard Chartered Bank. He provides investment updates and strategies for the sales network, educate sales network sophisticated investments instruments and portfolio planning. He also publishes monthly market update and quarterly investment bulletin to high net-worth clients and assists bankers in advising clients on investment products and portfolios. Prior to the current portfolio, Joseph had been intensively providing financial and investment advisory services to clients in renowned organisations such as Westpac Banking Corporation, Merrill Lynch International Bank, Prudential-Bache International and ING Asia.

After a successful and meaningful career with SIA, Dr Charlie Lim joined Deutsche Morgan Grenfell as a Stockbroker in 1995 and was head-hunted by UOBKayHian Pte Ltd in 2000. He is highly experienced in equity trading and has a large pool of delighted clients. He is involved in coordinating IPOs, especially those from China and M&A projects. Charlie is also a strong believer in lifelong learning. He is currently pursuing Harvard Business School courses and doing community service as a soccer coach.

  

VICTOR LIM

Victor Lim is a Certified Financial Analyst (CFA) with the Association for Investment Management and Research since 1990. Victor has 10 years of experience as an  investment analyst for a diversified range of clients in the Asia Pacific region. Until  recently, he was the Research Manager of Refco, responsible to provide investment advisory to clients in private wealth management and stock broking. He is specialized in building stock portfolios for clients in the Asian Region and has in the meantime started his own company managing his own Fund.

 

ANDY ONG

Andy is the Managing Editor of Asia Financial Planning Journal, the definitive trade journal for financial services professionals. The journal is published by AFPJ Pte Ltd which specialises in publishing financial planning journals and books, and organising conferences related to the financial services industry. Andy is a Certified Financial Planner, a professional designation bestowed by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards. He is the Founding President the Financial Planning Association of Singapore (FPAS). He is a member of the Financial Planning Association (US) as well as the author of several best selling books in Singapore and Malaysia which include Personal Financial Planning in Singapore and Malaysia and  Investing in Unit Trusts in Singapore, to name a few. He is also the lead author and editor in chief of Singapore's only financial planning textbook, A Singapore Guide to Personal Financial Planning. He has also contributed articles to various business and personal finance magazines. PAUL STEFANSSON

Since completing university, Paul has become a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, Chartered Financial Analyst, and Certified Financial Planner. Paul has 20 years of financial services experience. He is currently the CEO of Ipac financial planning Singapore, Asia Pacific's leading financial planning company with over 20,000 customers and $5 billion of funds under advice. Paul also sits on Entrepreneur's Resource Centre's Advisory Board. Paul started his career in the life insurance industry in 1985 with Great-West Life in Canada in actuarial valuation, product development, marketing, agency compensation, and group underwriting. After 5 years with Great-West Life, he joined North American Life to reengineer the defined benefit pension division. He was then recruited by Assante Corporation to work on investment management and business development. Paul is also on the Executive Committee and is head of the Certification Committee for the Financial Planning Association of Singapore and is a prolific speaker on the topics of investment and wealth management. He has also been featured in CNBC, The Straits Times, Business Times, Smart Investor, Fundsupermart magazine and on News Radio. 

 

Calvin Yeo

Calvin began his career in the financial industry 14 years ago with a subsidiary of DBS Group. His wealth of experience brought him to many companies including I.C.S. Limited, Professional Investment Advisory Services Pte Ltd, A.I.A. and finally G K Goh Wealth Management Group. Calvin is a Financial Advisor and a Trainer by profession. He started training in 1996 and has been very active in the training arena since. His area of expertise includes Wealth, Financial Planning, Financial Literacy, Stocks & Shares Trading, Sales and Customer Service. Recently Calvin has just started his own Personal Financial Coaching business. He helps his clients learn the traits of managing their own wealth and finances. He provides the tools for his clients to guide them through a series of courses through a concept call “The Wheel of Wealth”. He is considered as one of the very few Financial Coaches in Singapore.

Edwin is the Financial Services Director of Prudential Assurance Singapore. During his active personal sales periods, he had achieved various company awards and international recognition such as Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) for consecutively 6 years. Edwin was promoted to the Management level in 1996 and has since achieved several awards such as Top 10 Group Manager of the Year and GAMA Singapore Management Awards (Gold and Platinum). Edwin is a PhD Research Fellow with Preston University. He is also a Fellow in the Chartered Financial Practitioner programmes.

 

VINCENT TAI

Vincent was a financial derivative professional with 2 large multinational companies for more than 12 years. His main strengths are in exchange traded leveraged products, such as futures and options. Used to offer trading advice to clients, he is currently an investor in overseas exchanges. Generating an average of 1.5 times return on equity, he is well versed on the macro and microeconomics governing the markets. Vincent has lectured at commercial schools on capital market instruments, conducted workshops for large multinational companies and wealth managers.

 

Assessment

At the end of each module, participants will complete an examination. The hands-on Paper Trading module will also allow for students to put their newly acquired skills and knowledge to the test, under the careful guidance of two Mentors who will chart their progress and development.

An administrative fee of $100 would be made payable by any participant upon withdrawal from the programme.

The Diploma in Business is pre-approved by the Skills development Fund (SDF).

SDF was formed with the primary objective of encouraging employers to invest in skills upgrading of the workforce. The SDF does this by offering assistance as an incentive to companies to mount training programmes for employees.

Participants will be eligible for an SDF training support of 80% of the total course fee if they fulfill the SDF requirements:

Companies are registered or incorporated in Singapore.

Training is fully sponsored by companies.

Participants are employees who are either Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents (PR) of Singapore.
Participants have achieved at least 75% attendance and have sat for all examinations.

Attach copies of education certificates, transcripts and any supporting documents (absence of minimum academic qualifications); and
